This week we have been doing sports. We have started each morning with keep fit to music. On Tuesday we all did keep fit together in the hall with Reception and Year 2 and on Thursday morning the whole school did keep fit on the field. It really was good fun.

We did some circuit training. It was hard work but we enjoyed it!

We looked at the work of an Artist called Andy Goldsworthy. He uses lots of natural materials to make sculptures. We made our own sculptures. This week it was the turn of Otters to make some sculptures. We made some amazing sculptures!

We also retold the story of Whatever Next. We pretended we were Little Bear and asked and answered questions. We wrote these down.

We have split words into syllables and used instruments to make a noise for each syllable in words and poems.

Year 1 has had a great start to 2017. We have started our topic of ‘The Big Freeze’. In English we have been learning g about what makes up a non fiction report. We have been studying polar bears and penguins so far. We are planning to write our own non fiction report on Emperor Penguins in the next couple of weeks. In maths we have been getting practising counting in 2’s , 10’s  and 5’s. We have also been using vocabulary such as groups of and lots of to help us with our counting.

As part of our topic we have created our own corner of Antarctica. The children love playing in the igloo and enjoy pretending to be explorers looking for polar bears , penguins and much more!
Our value for this term is respect and the children are trying really hard to demonstrate it at all times. Finally, we have a new member to the class. He a worry monster. The children can place their worries inside it and he will chew them all up for them !!

We have been reading our books and sharing them with our friends.

We have also performed our Christmas plays. We hope that you enjoyed watching them!

We have also sang songs to our friends and even showed dances that we know!

Year 1 have had a super start to the year! They have settled in well to their  classroom and have all made new friends. We have been learning about the “Three Little Pig”. As part of our work we created numicon houses for the pigs to live in, pig masks for our role play and retold the story for English. Izzie worked really hard on her description of the pig using adjectives and  conjunctions to extend her sentences. Feel free to come in and look at our display anytime ! We even managed to get outside in all this beautiful weather we have been having and recreate our own version  of the tale.

Finally, have started work on a new role play area based on recycling and anything you have at home, e.g.cardboad boxes, plastic milk bottles, will be gratefully  received.

We want to make the Year1 and 2 outside area an even more fun and inspiring place to learn. We have been designing the things that we would like to see outside. Can you find the photos of us thinking about and drawing our designs? Luckily the weather was good so we sat outside to work.

We have also been practising our sounds this week. We have been learning ‘wh’ as in when,  ‘ph’  as  in phone,  ‘ew’ as in stew, ‘oe’ as in toe, ‘au’ as in author and ‘ey’ as in money.

Can you see the photos of us taking away in the shop? We were spending money and seeing how much we had left. We also played a game called 4 in a row where we had to take away numbers from 10 and 20.

In reading activities we were remembering to use our fingers to cover up part of the word to help us sound longer words out.

w/c 26.9.16

In Year1 this week we have been adding and taking away in our maths learning. We have used cubes, tens and ones apparatus, apples, number lines , fingers and what we already know to help us. We have been writing our calculations down using + and = signs.

We have been sorting and finding out about materials. We have been thinking of words to describe our houses and we have drawn and labelled them.

We have started to think about how we can make our Year1 and 2 outside area into a learning space that is fun and interesting. We have drawn and written about our ideas so that we can show them to Mrs Dance.
